Default $800 for P&P and mill, too much?

Me and my brother are rebuilding a 01 LQ4. It has the 317 heads and he's wanting to boost compression some. He called a place about an hour away from us(the only place we could find that would do it) and he said porting/polishing, milling the heads, and doing a 3 angle valve job would run around $800. Too me that seems pretty high since we could buy a set of 243's or l92's for around that. I may be out of line but what do you guys typically pay for this?

That seems really high to me, considering I had my heads done with a infinite angle valve job, mill, some super light clean up work for about 150-200 if I remember correctly. Hell WCCH charges about that much, I believe they also install bigger valves. How reputable is the shop? These heads do not need hard port work, as they flow well to start.

I've never heard of the shop to be honest. My brother had talked to a couple of his friends that race here and there and that's who they recommended. I think I may call a place in Indianapolis that I've been told about. I've heard great things about them. I just wanted to make sure I was right in my thinking.

I wouldn't put any money into stock castings.

Stock 317s can make great power with boost.

Thats what kind of prices I got when I looked into it around here.
Just a basic clean, deck, mill, valvejob. No porting. Was going to cost me $350-400 with the 3 shops I looked into doing some.
Are they flowing the heads after? Any promising #'s?

My stock 317's picked up almost 60 CFM with a valve job, bowl blend, and short side work.

I'm trying to talk him into boost. We are doing ls9 gaskets and studs while we build the motor just incase he decides to go FI at some point.

Nope and nope. We found another guy that's been recommended from a few guy around here. He's hard to get ahold of though. I've been told he's fairly cheap too since he does it as a side job. I guess he can check and balance the crank, mill, P&P, valve job and assemble the heads. The kid I talked to said he just had a set of 243's done for around $300 out the door. Now it's just trying to get ahold of the guy and get a quote.

If quality work it is worth it but to pay top $ for med core wouldn't be good. I know what it takes to make these heads right and it won't be had for $300.00 unless someone is giving their work away.

Alright gotcha. Well I was told last night to check out a guy from Terre Haute that has built numerous racing engines and pulling engines. Anyways, he said he would mill, P&P, and do a valve job for $800. He also said he would give us a print out of the before and after flow too. I feel more comfortable that he can do that and from the couple guys I talked to at work last night he has a really good rep around this area.
