Default DOD oil useage........

I've heard here and there that DOD engines use some oil and I guess I've experienced that without knowing what was the cause. Question is- is it normal or pretty much normal for said engine to use 1.5 quarts in 500 miles? I'm on a road trip to a family reunion and this is what's happening............

If you are burning 1.5 quarts in 500 miles you have something wrong and it is not the DOD.
I would not want to be on a road trip with that going on because it may get worse.
Plus if you are burning that much oil it will clog up the catalytic convertors.
If you are not burning it there should be a big oil slick somewhere.

sometimes the rings get gummed up in DOD engines and you can try and run a top end cleaner or SeaFoam to break it up at least in gen 4 engines

Dang! That's pretty low mileage!

Does that dongle DOD/AFM disabler gadget have any effect on lowering oil consumption? Maybe give that a try and monitor the oil to see if you trace that to the root cause? Isn't it like $100?

Edit: I was thinking of the Range disabler and looks like it's $215 on Amazon. Still worth a shot. And cheaper than winding up with damaged cats...

If it’s an LT engine you need to run ring free. I’ve seen outboards loose 40% of their compression from carbon build up in ring lands. My buddies 6.2 was running like **** so I shocked it and it blew black smoke like a diesel for 2 days when he romped on it. Had to change the plugs bc the excessive ring free fouled them up,
