I tried piecing together a kit thinking it would be cheaper but it would be easier and about the same price to go with the Texas Speed kit.

Alot of it depends on whether you want the upgraded ls2/3 style pcv system or just want the truck top plate... the truck top plate/valley cover is about $50 the ls2 style is like $140... pick up a set of melling jb2079 lifters which are identical to the gm ls7 lifters (down to the part numbers on the sides of the lifter body) for about half the price especially on ebay...if youre using a stock cam stock pushrods will be fine and the springs you probably want to upgrade to the ls3 or ls6 springs or a set of 918s... if you are using a stock cam and really want to you can actually save some money piecing it together, as you dont need a cam sprocket and hardened pushrods and a different tensioner/dampener by time you get head and other necessary gaskets and bolts you may be close to same but its all in shopping around!!
