Cracked Transfer Case...
#1
I know there are a few threads on here for cases that have a hole due to the pump rub, but i have quite a different issue...
I have a 2008 bone stock GMC Sierra 1500 with the 6.0l and 4.10 gears (HD towing package) with 58k miles. I was towing one of my cars out to Norwalk, Ohio, and a couple hours after getting there, we noticed a rather large puddle of reddish fluid under the truck. Upon further inspection, the transfer case appears to be cracked along the bottom of the threads under the drain plug...
I ended up using RTV sealant to slow the leak down enough to make the 6.5hr trip back home... Once i got back home, i took it to the dealer and they are telling me that it is due to the drain plug being over tightened, and as such they will not cover it under the 5yr / 100k power train warranty.
Now i did have a shop go through the truck about a month ago for the 50k miles service... The transfer case fluid was done at that time.
I did not notice any leaking fluid for the past month or so, so i am not sure i am buying the over tightened excuse.
Not sure why it decided to show up when it did, maybe due to the extra strain of towing?
Anyways, has anyone else ever had this issue???
If yes, how much to fix?
Thanks...

I would assume a good welder can fix the crack in your transfer case but if it doesn't work I can sell you a awd tranfer case out of a 08 Escalade dirt chep if that will help. But its going to be awd all the time. Good Luck.

I think the tcase is made of some kind of magnesium metal so not sure if it can be welded. You could jb weld it for now but the best fix would be to replace the tcase half case. I think they run around $1-200

You are under mileage and under time limit it's still under warranty. Take it to another dealer tell the svc manager and show them the problem and gm will put you in a brand spankin new case under warranty. DO NOT ATTEMPT A REPAIR BEFORE DOING THIS.

I already have taken it to a dealer and spoke with the service manager... They said it was due to the drain plug being over tightened, therefore voiding the warranty. I guess I could try another dealership...
