You seem too focused on something being too performance oriented. With all of the modifications I've done to my truck I still manage to get the same MPG's I got when it was bone stock. Except now I'm a few seconds faster and trailers don't slow me down as much as they used to.

What Trever1t was saying is that Carb'd engines and Computer controlled engines run off of the same principles. They both need Air, Fuel, and Spark. The only difference is that newer engines have these things more precisely controlled.
Anything you would have done to an old school Gen1 engine for better MPG's you would do to a newer engine. The better the engine can breath and the more efficiently it's being fueled, the better your mpgs will be.

Get a good aftermarket muffler as stated and a tune to optimize the air fuel mixture and spark timing. Add a trans cooler, shift kit, and servo's to help the trans last longer. Modifying the Airbox to allow more air to flow in is a good free mod that you can do yourself. If you want to put a CAI on it just go with the cheapest one you can find that you like or build your own. The main advantage is that you've reduced air restriction.
