Is it really worth it to spend the extra couple grand to get the 6 speed in a 2010 vs the 4 speed in an 09?


Performance and acceleration wise, mpg wise.

Im not sure if spending the extra money is justified.



All opinions welcome.

Bump. Im not sure if the lack of response means that few think spending the extra money is worth it, or if few have had the chance to compare the two. The 6 speed sounds like a great idea in our trucks. I just wonder if it really is.

Well on paper it certainly is...you can run less rear diff gear and yet get better acceleration and also lower cruising rpms on the highway. Bit heavier than the 4 speed but stronger as well.

I've heard some guys complain it shifts/hunts a lot. I think that would depend on the overall combo. Plan on test drives soon but no 2wd models around ot do a direct comparison to mine.

I'd love to see identical 09's and 10's run side by side to see how they compare with no variables. I'd spend the money, I'm tempted to trade in mainly for the 6 speed but also some pretty hefty rebates on right now up here...

get the 10 IMHO.

it's a better tranny, fuel wise and probably performance wise, better ratios
for first few gears.
it is also based on 80 series rather than 60 series, 80 series being much more durable.

it costs more but u are also getting a truck one year newer

The 700R4, 4L60, 4L60E, 4L65E, 4L70E etc... are all Pieces of **** based on a almost 30 year old design that they kept putting a new coat of paint on but were always a step behind the power output of the engine they were put on. But to make them worse, the gear spacing just sucks. I like the 3.06 first of them but the second gear needed to be lowered a little and they never did.

I am not a fan of automatics, but with the tunability of them now and the converter technology advancements, they are tempting.

With that said. The 6 speed auto is nice. I might actually be able to own an extended cab now.

A nice set of 4:10's would fix the shifts hunting. Damm gas mileage gears they are putting in them is what makes them hunt. At a minimum 3:73's after getting a set of gears in them they would not hunt. A downshift is caused because the throttle position is increasing and the computer say's "hey dammit drop a gear I need some more RPM and torque to pull this hill."

its shifts more because of the closer gear ratio's. Now when i drive my old suburban i keep waiting for it to shift. The 6 is a much better tranny. In comparison the Vmax/4 speed did 0-60 in 7.9, the 5.3/6 speed did it in 7.6 according to a truck trend test. both were 4door 4wd trucks.

Well i love my 6l80e, great trans so far, a good tune helps with the search shifting, u do lose the 60mph sweet spot that the 4l60e has but if i catch a similar truck mods wise with a 4spd, by the time he hits 3rd im reelin him in hard!
