I'm asking here, but from my experience a smaller pipe will give you more low end and take some from the top if it's too small. A bigger pipe will lose a little on the low end but gain on top. It happened when I added a 3" catback to my 91 Chevy with a TB and 350. It lost all kinds of low end with the 3" on it. Thanks for the help guys!
I like that HP/Exhaust info. Shows why they went bigger on the 6.2. I really like the sound of my stock. A bit louder would be nice but for stock it impressed me. Especially right at cold startup in the morning. Sounds real throaty

I put a Borla single cat-back on my 01 Tahoe 5.3 and I definitely lost a tad off the bottom but it more than made up for it in mid and high rpms.

I think you'll like the stock exhaust once your cammed with headers and no cats. It definitely doesn't sound stock, at least on my setup. You can tell it's cammed, and it has some tone around town, but once you hop on the highway it's dead stock silent. Pretty nice.

what you do depends on your objective.
better sound--- take the resonator out of the tail pipe
ultimate performance-----3.5 inch and big tube headers
reasonable cost----- taken out resonator
good sound and performance improvement-----3" cat back, maybe headers
keep in mind, Headers make a huge difference in the sound volume of a catback.
My goal is performance without too much noise.
I have done mine in 5 stages. [ I own a shop so have the luxury of trying stuff]
1. I did arh 1 7/8 headers and their catted y pipe in the proper size tubing to fit the big oe exhaust flange and 3.5 inch tubing, at the same time
I removed the resonator from the tail pipe. This set up worked well and sounded better than stock, but had a thinny sound like a flowmaster
that I didn't care for. Baffles in oe muffler were rattling.
2. I put a 3.5 inch straight thru Magnaflow in place of the stock muffler. part #14909, sounded really good but way to loud for me.
3. added a 3.5 inch magnaflow resonator, part # 14919 in front of the 3.5 inch magnaflow muffler. this was still too loud.
4. took off all the magnaflow stuff and oe stuff behind the front flange and installed new dynomax stainless 3" catback with straight thru muffler.
sounded good but still too loud.
5. added a 3" magnaflow straight thru resonator in front of the dynomax muffler, perfection
I know sound is a personal deal and some guys would do headers, no cats and 3.5" cat back and think it sounds great.
I can definitely say that the 3 inch stuff gave me back some low rpm power that I lost with the big headers and 3.5 inch stuff.
