My 01' is a lighter truck, had 3.42s factory with the 4.8/60E. I swapped to 4.11s, it was much better. But still felt like it needed more gear. I am on a 31" tire BTW.
He would need 4.56 gears to help that motor operate correctly, by changing the cam he is pushing is torque output to a higher RPM. One of the things some forget is to look at the torque curves of your motor and than with tire size figure out the rpm you need to be at than get the proper gears to achieve that rpm range.

So many of these new vehicles have a 31-32" tire and are running 3.08 gears. What the Hell is that with two OD gears? if you are running a lighter and smaller tire Camaro/Corvetter sure, but 5500lb vehicles no way with the 6L80 having a .85 and .67 OD's the torque rpm's dictate at least a 4.10 gear ratio which with 31" tires give you 2K at 70 mph.
