Default windshield wipers off track?

I picked up a new to me 2002 2500HD. The other day I used the wipers for the first time and they are not operating correctly. the wipers do not go far enough on the up stroke (by about 3"), and go down so far that they collide with the wiper cowl. They seem to return to the correct spot when in the off position.

I had an OBS when i was younger that i turned the wipers on in a car wash one time and they got stuck half way on my windshield when in the off position. I grabbed them and forced them down where they belong and felt that it just skipped a gear or something. before i go cranking on these wipers to attempt to "skip a gear tooth" does anyone know the correct way to fix this issue?

I had the same problem on just one of my wipers on my 04, the sweep was too low like you said, unbolted it from the shaft, turn the power on to the truck, turned the wipers on, turned the truck off at the top of the sweep, lined the wiper up with the dirt line on the window and bolted it back down.

Seems simple enough. I assume the cowl needs to come off to do this? I've been driving these trucks since Y2K and have never had the cowl off of one. I've probably touched every other bolt on these trucks except for the wipers.

I didnt have to take the cowl off to do it, just pop little cover off the nut.

You probably will want a puller to get the wiper off. It's a bitch to get off in my opinioin

Oh, I assumed the shaft you were referring to was under the cowl near the motor. I assumed that the wiper blades were indexed with a keyway. does it matter if i install the blades at the top of the stroke vs the very bottom? finding the bottom seems easier since you can just turn off the motor, let it fall to the bottom, then index the blades level across the bottom of the windshield.

No they are not indexed via the shaft
Yes I would do it at the bottom.

Seemed like when I had the windshield replaced on my 06 it was no big deal to index the wipers. I pulled all the parts before going to the glass shop so they wouldn't have to mess with it, so I put it all back and set the wipers myself. There's like a 1/4" vertical line right about mid-blade at the bottom of the glass for where the wipers should line up; I set my blades to right at the bottom end of that line. Not sure all glass has that line though.. if not, my blades are resting maybe 1/4" max above the solid black masking around the edge of the glass.

Agreed on the remove wipers, turn wipers on then off, let it "park" so you're setting them in the resting position.

They have a spline. but for the bottom of the stroke the Glass should have two marks to line up the blades near the base of the glass.
