whats with the coating GM uses on there frames?

Yea, the stuff they coat the frame with comes off real easy...a few years back I was chasing a squeak from my suspension and spraying some lubricant around the left front upper shock mount and the coating came right off. (squeak turned out to be the upper shock mount...got it replaced under warranty). Not too long afterwards I started to noticed the nice orange glow of rust. I bought a small can of POR (Paint Over Rust) and followed the directions and so far so good
The other day I noticed the coating coming off inside the tubes that run from one frame rail to the other, under the bed

The frames are supplied by Magna International. GM decided to do a cost save several years back and made a boner decision to source the frames to sweat shop labour and the proposed coating was ......... you got it "wax". The previous coatings were much more robust. If you live in areas with snow and ice always get the aftermarket coating year after year.

great info
I took my hitch off last week to put on my shackles and noticed the undercoating squirted out between the hitch and frame and now there are 3 bare spots on each side of the frame were the hitch mounted up against
Ill have to pick up a can of that stuff.

grease all over the underside of the frame. now i know what to recover it with.
