I Did a thread about oil and filters about a month or so ago, someone came up with a link to someone who did oil filter tests and comparisons, totally cut the filters apart, explained the Ya's and Na's of each one. maybe someone can find it again. that will answer some of your questions, But yeah The Frams were considered JUNK, Sorry.

...I remember that thread, I think I may have provided the link. Here's one that I've referred to a few times: http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html

Also check out bobistheoilguy.com.

I'm using AC Delco PF-59's and Mobil1 10w-30, until I run out of the PF-59's which have been discontinues (I have 2 left). Then I'll probably start using the AC Delco UPF-46 or UPF-44 (whichever one it is, can't remember...but I think it's mentioned in the thread you started a few months back). The new UPF's are shorter, but they seem to work out for the Corvettes, so I don't think my truck will mind too much.

Mobil 1 filter (Whatever # is recomended) and Mobil 1 10W 30 oil every 3K miles. Im sure I could go longer, but I can manage $40 for an oil change every 5 months Im just now realizing how bad my tune has been for quite some time..... I dont know if the maintanance had anything to do with it.

Using Mobil 1 full synthetic 5w-30 & a K&N oil filter part # HP-1007
All model year LQ9 6.0L use the HP-1007
The 2003-current 4.8L & 5.3L use the HP-1007
The 1999-2002 4.8L & 5.3L use the HP-2006
I can't tell you really why they are different, but that's what K&N lists.
The HP-2006 is long/ AC Delco cross reference: PF45 & PF58
The HP-1007 is short/ AC Delco cross reference: PF44 & PFAX96
Since GM recommends the PF44 for mine, then I'll use the short filter.

The Royal Purple runs me less than $5.50/qt, the Canton Racing CM Filter replacememt element is less than $12.
This is from RP website:
How often should I change Royal PurpleŽ in my passenger car?

Royal PurpleŽ recommends following the manufacturer's maintenance intervals while the vehicle is under factory warranty. In clean engines that are no longer under warranty, oil change intervals up to 12,000 miles with continued filter changes every 3,000 to 4,000 miles (top-off oil as needed) are recommended. In dirty engines, Royal PurpleŽ recommends standard 3,000 to 5,000 mile oil and filter change intervals until the engine oiling system is clean and free of deposits, which are left by lower quality oils and / or poor maintenance or mechanical problems. This will allow time to gradually remove existing deposits / contaminants without overloading the oiling system (pump, pick-up, filter, etc.). (Mechanical problems such as fuel dilution, coolant leaks into the crankcase, poor air filtration and / or failure to maintain proper oil level are all detrimental factors to the service life of any engine oil. Any one of these factors can significantly shorten the useful service life of any oil).

I, however, change oil and filter @ around 7K-7500 per Chevrolet's recommendation. Never had any issues, oil still looks good when changed and the service record speaks for it's self.

As far as cost is concerned, $33/oil + $12/element = $45/7500 miles vs $30-$40/3000 miles...which is cheaper? I even have a local shop that will do the change for me with my supplied materials for only $8...btw, they love the Fram quick change fitting I installed several years ago on my oil pan...when I do the change, I love it as well.

This is just what I do...it works for me and I feel confident w/ it's performance.

I run either a K&N oil filter or an Amsoil oil filter with Amsoil 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel oil (better for heavy duty apps, like towing). Costs me about $10 for the filter and $45ish for the oil. But, unlike you guys my TrailBlazer takes 7qts of oil!!!!! And, since its synthetic, it only gets changed every 8-10K.
