Track times?
#1
Hey all,
I was wondering what my truck might run for track times? Its a 1993 C2500, SCLB, its got the 5.7 TBI with a 5 speed, 2wd. Mods include 14" open filter, flowmaster super 40 series single 3" in and dual 2.5" out. The rims are going to be 15"s kind of like the 454SS rims and everything else is stock, the clutch is new and the tranny is almost new. What else can I do to get this old girl down the track alittle faster? I have a limited income being a high school student so nothing crazy thats gunna kill my bank acount.
Thanks guys

well, you will probly run a high 17 or low 18.
There really isnt very many thing you can do to those old motors to make them fast. The only things I can really think of that would be in your budget would be: A throttle body spacer, and swap that flow for a magnaflow. Other than that your kinda screwed untiol you can go inside the motor and cam it. But what you should do is save up you $$$ for when that motor blows and built yourself a nice 383 stroker, that would be the ****.

I was thinking about the same times as 99Blackz71 said. Wow, you have a 350 TBI with a 5-speed!? Did it come from the factory like this? I've never heard of a 350 TBI/5 speed combo from the factory.

Jesus an 18? Thats slow, lol but ya its a 350 TBI with a 5 speed. MG5 RPO code. Its an ok combo, the first gear is really low, and you shift out quick. Whats involved in a cam swap? I know need the cam, and gaskets for the valve covers and stuff, but what about the springs, push rods and lifters? Do they need to be pulled? Thanks guys

ya there where actually quite a few 5-speed 350's back then!
there was a guy at the track last sunday and he had a 305 auto with intake exhaust, gutted cats and I think he had a chip and he ran a like an 18.30.
Anyhow I dont think you need the valve cover gaskets. but what I think you will need are: cam, hardened pushrods, valvesprings, water pump gasket, timing chain cover gasket, and I think you will need head gaskets too.

If i were you i would get ahold of MjHoward on this site and ask him a few things. He is a Gen I/II small block guru (IMO) so he could tell you all of the tricks of the trade. Shoot him a pm if he doesnt find this thread. He has built a 383 for his truck that is similar to yours so he should be a great help. Good luck!

Not sure he would need head gaskets, would he? Intake manifold gaskets for sure tho... Gotta take that off to get to the lifters. I cant remember if the 93s were factory roller or not... If they arent you'll need cam and lifters both, if they are roller, your stock lifters might be ok, but depending on mileage, which being a 93 I assume is pretty high, you might need to replace them. But, IMO... Just start saving and dont worry about how fast it is right now... Save as much as you can and when the motor DOES go, like 99blackZ71 says... Build a kick *** 383 stroker, bro... sure you might be slow now, but think of how bad *** it would be to have that stroker....

I think he has to remove the heads get to the lifters, and I dont think they are roller, they're hydraulic. Thats why I said he would need head gaskets.
02bigblock- when I had my 89 my motor blew the 1st time at 180k I believe(again at 186k and again at 192k), so your motor will be getting there too if you race it and drive the hell outta it. that why I say you just take it easy, save your money, and build a STROKER!
(geez, Ive put 17k on my truck now and havnt blown it up so I must be doin good or chevy learned how to build an engine haha lol)

Thats true, I think I might run a 350 with the edelbrock EFI system, If I ran that with maybe a nice cam then I could make some power, right now the low end on the motor is good but then she "chuggs" at higher rpm? Its wierd it only does some times. The 5 speed is fun also, but I'm pretty sure a 383 would eat that thing alive, there isnt even a performance clutch for that tranny. But anyways, thanks guys, maybe I will biuld a 383 in the future.
