I am running a 285/50R18 and like the look a lot. Running into a problem though with the 285 up front, the truck tracks all over the place especially on heavily truck traveled roads. I was going to save up for a Trutrac to replace my burnt up Auburn or even a HSW N20 kit, but after looking at my tires I think that replacing them might have to be moved up on the priority list.
The Nitto 404s I have now have lasted me longer than I could hope for. Great wear, traction, and noise level. Running the 285/50-18 put me right at 29". With the 18"-8" CenterLines they fit really well. I like the side walls with my 2/4 drop!
What I am planing is going with a narrower front tire to help with the tracking problem I am having. I want to keep the same height or really close to what I have now. Only problem is they do not offer the NT404 in a narrower size. I was thinking of running Nitto's NT420S 255/55R18 up front and the NT404 285/50R18s out back. Front would be 28.94" by 10.10" and the rear will be 29.06" by 11.54". I would say that the height is pretty damn close and having all most a 1 1/2" difference in width will make a big difference yet keep the over all side wall appearance.
What do you all think about going to a 255 up front and keeping the 285s out back with different tread types? Will it look dumb? Any other suggestions?
Up Front!

Out Back!

I ran 255/55/18s and I thought they looked good. I had a 3/5 kit. I personally like to run the same brand and tread all the way around, but have seen many people run different ones on the front and rear. If they are similar, most won't even notice.

my 285s track also. Just the nature of having a wider tire. I would not sweat it. If you are rubbing, that may be a different story.
edit... Plus, you can still rotate the tires keeping the 285s.
