Default Thinking about buying 2001 8.1/allison

I'm looking at a 2001 Silverado 2500hd 8.1/Allison 4x4. The truck has 255K miles on it. The owner has changed the oil every 5K miles and changed the trans fluid every 25K miles. He wants $8k for it. It's mostly been used on the highway, and he say's he's probably towed with it 10% of the time. OVerall, the truck is in really good condition for it's age. The owner seems to have taken good care of it. He said he gets between 13-15mpg? I'm not worried about mpg, I have a daily driver. This truck would be used to tow a pontoon and to haul the 4wheelers to a local offroad park to play. I might put 3k miles a year on the truck.

I can't find much info on the 8.1/Allison longevity. I know the 8.1 is based off the old 454 and will use some oil. I'm more familiar with the 6.0 and I have a low mileage short block at home.

I don't really know alot about the Allison. But from what I've read, they are a solid transmission.

So do ya'll think the price vs mileage is a good price? What about the longevity of the 8.1? He has maintained the motor and trans.

Does he have proof that he has maintained it like he says?

No. He said he services his own vehicles. He is the second owner.
