Tailgates and MPGs...

the real question is how much air has to pass over the truck to create X lbs of downforce. you can put a fan on a truck and create down force but its minimal.....with that being said the speed will create downforce so if you slow to take a corner how much force are you really creating? Its like putting a wing on a honda to run the 1/4 mile......they need weight in the front but they put it on the trunk. Is it gonna help in the 1/4? ..... it might a 120mph but they spin and don't run that fast. So tailgate up or down or off won't make much difference on a road course unless its for weightloss.....

I don't know if completely agree with that. Even at 40 mph, in a turn, a wing is actually functional if set up right. The problem as you said is with hondas, they are front wheel drive. I'm a big fan of the show TopGear, and they were recently testing a car, I think it was a Koenigsegg. They were having a hard time keeping the backend planted in corners. They took it back, added a small wing, and it was then planted. Not sure if a tailgate would have enought of an effect however. But it is proven, that whether it be a wing on the back, or a splitter on the front, it actually does create a lot of downforce at less than excessive speeds.

i was just bustin ya ***** haha! a Car like the koenigsegg is one of a kind.... that car was built to go in speed in excess of 200 mph... the few little things like a small wing or a front lip wing or anything like that will help that car...esp. if you are making turns at 80-100mph where a truck would be taking the same curve at most likely half the speed. Im not a road racer but many of the truck guys i talk to about this rely heavily on sway bars and shock or suspension set up. But to say that the gate down wouldn't help...????? mythbusters haha!

They say with the tailgate up, the air swirls creating a high pressure area in the box, which keeps the air coming over the truck, from pushing down and creating downforce. With the tailgate down, the air comes over the cab, and pushes down on the back of the truck, causing downforce and more drag. My thought is this. If you built a truck that could be ran on a road course. You could put the tailgate down, and run a bar between the box sides to stabilize that. Wouldn't this downforce keep the backend planted in corners? Hmm...
with the tail gate up the air that flows over the cab and hits the tail gate gets caught in the "bed area" and tries to rise,(continuously spinning from TG to cab to up then forced back to TG) creating a odd shapped O of air
but the air that is still flowing over the truck will not let it escape so it creates at vacume(vortex, or what ever its called).
this vacume (i think thats what it is called) will let the air travel over it and in point...over the tail gate.......so from the top of the truck back works just like a car, with the tailgate up.
tail gate down, will not work.
