Apparently this happens quite often. My speedo started doing screwing things. Look down and it would read 100mph while doing 35. It's the stepper motor and needs replacing. I swapped out the stepper motor today. Total time to do it about 30 minutes. Cost about 12 bucks. Guys on E-bay charging 150 to do this.

Here is what the speedo looked like when I pulled it out.

Really easy to get the cluster out. Prolly about the 10th time I've had mine out for different things. Drop the steering wheel all the way down. Put the e-brake on, turn the key and drop the gear selector down to low. Then pull the cluster garnish off. Just snapped in. 4 bolts hold the cluster in. Unplug from the rear. Make sure the gauge is reset before unplugging it. All the needles at 0.


Once you get the cluster out. Disassemble it down to the needles. Lots of snaps holding it together. Without touching the needles mark their position. I used masking tape and marked the positions. Pull the needles straight off, then the overlay and continue tearing it down to the PCB board. Just snapped together.


Then its just a matter of finding the 4 solder points of the motor and de-soldering it. A solder sucker or solder wick is necessary to get the solder out of the holes. Pull the old motor off and put the new one in and solder it back up careful not to burn the traces.




Put everything back together to the point of putting the clear cover back on. Placing the needles in the marked position. Take the cluster back to the truck and plug it in. This will reset the needles. Make sure they are lined up. If not unplug it, reposition the needles and plug it back up until they reset back where they were. Took me several times to get them right.

Finished product and working fine. This is back in the truck with it idling. Took it for a spin and speedo is right on.

 

on ebay they swap all the gauges and add tranny temp and even do escalade faces. were did you get the step motor? min reads 0 and my oil pressure is out.

 

where did you get the stepper motor from I need one since my cluster is acting up

Did a search on e-bay for the stepper motor. Search "stepper GM". 2 or 3 guys selling them. I bought 3 but only replaced the one for now.
