Anyone else have an issue with speed engineering headers having a clearance issue with 4l80 trans bellhousing. Passenger side second to last primary tube is touching my tans case. 99-06.5
1 3/4 lts |
Is it the bolt tab for the cover? I cut mine off I don’t run the cover. iirc it would have hit if I didn’t cut it off.
I cut that ear off mine with a sawzall else it would’ve hit it.
I have 1 7/8 had to cut that tab off as well.
Looks like i will be cutting the tab off of both the bellhousing and shield. seems shoddy this was never corrected, i managed to get it bolted up without being forceful and looked underneath installing starter to find its touching. Merp. #shouldaspentmore

FWIW it’s a common thing.
I have TSP headers also. |
seems pretty silly they didnt just tweak the pipe a little bit to get them to clear, the room it there. wonder if the kooks also rub the bell. not a happy camper. speed engineering for the lose.
That’s a common issue with all headers. Cut the tab off.
thats the plan. just stating they should have taken the time to get it to clear the 80e. pretty dumb to have to take a cut off wheel to a trans i took the time to base and clear.
Most if not all headers are designed for the 1500 trucks that don’t have a 80e.
i hear that, but most updated the y pipes to fit the 80e as well as 60e. bothersome is all.
They aren't designed to work with an 80e, why be mad at speed engineering?
Because they advertise updating the y pipe which mates to their lts to specifically accommodate a 80E. Wouldnt you assume if someone was making special revisions to a y pipe the headers would at least clear lol.

Sounds like they are saying there is a y pipe to clear an 80e, you're saying the headers hit, so maybe the headers work with the tab cut off the trans and the 80e y pipe is different to clear another part of the 80e that the normal 60e y pipe wouldn't clear. I didn't know they advertised them to work with a 4L80 so yeah man if they do advertise it to fit and doesn't I'd be pissed too. Fortunately it's a super easy fix. |
If you just need a little room from the header you can try what I did. I started the truck and let it run and revved it a lot to get a bunch of heat in the headers. After getting them hot I ratchet strapped the header to the frame and made a light pull on the header until it moved over the 1/8th inch I needed it to move.
I set out straps and got a plan before getting them hot, I also quickly wrapped the collector with foil so it wouldn't burn the ratchet strap |
They simply advertised the y pipe has been updated to fit the 80e, it wouldnt make any logical sense to update a y pipe that goes with those headers if the headers dont fit. thats really putting the carriage before the horse. anyone buying the y pipe is buying the headers in most cases. could have been a simple update. have since hacked my tab off lol. truck goes for a dyno tune tomorrow morning. only lot drives atm.
