Default something ate my wiring harness, need advice

i have a 96 suburban (k1500), and it has been sitting for about 3 months waiting for me to replace the trans. it ran fine when i parked it, but now it will not start.
it cranks at full speed, but makes no attempt to run.

i looked under the front of the truck and immediately could see wires hanging down. i looked at the engine from the passenger side and i can see several bare wires, some chewed completely thru, and some missing as much as 6" on insulation, leaving just bare wire hanging around.

all of the damaged wires seem to be located around the front of the engine, near the crank pulley area.

What do these wires control? (something important obviously, it doesnt run anymore)

Is it worth the effort to repair the harness, or should i get a harness from the junkyard? How difficult is removing the harness in one piece?

another option i had been considering before this happened:
buy a drop in LS conversion, preferably a 6.0/4l80e combo

anybody else had this happen? what should i do?

Known as rodent damage, it's happened to me, twice. First was wire to the coil pack, the other were wheel position sensor wires. I soldered them up with good success........
