Diesel FTW if you plan on extensive towing.
I pull a 24 foot gooseneck regularly full of cattle and can pull just as hard as my buddy with the same truck only his is a dirtymax. and yes I drop from about 13 to about 10 and he gets about 13 pulling. and I am not anywhere near flatland either.

D-max for sure. for heavy towing the diesel will last longer and give you better MPG. Plus with some basic mods they can be pretty quick.

Being a mechanic I say a 8.1 if you want to keep it out of the shop.

Or diesel if you got deep pockets to fix it when it goes down.

The only Duramax that could apply to that theory would be the 01-04 LB7 due to hit or miss injectors.

All other years all very very reliable.

But yes, performance builds are very pricey but thats not eeven the subject here.

I have 63,000 on mine, owned it since it had 1 mile, and its been tuned since 500 miles and ZERO mechanical problems.

8.1s IIRC have valve spring or head issues ?

I wouldnt buy a Max unless you have some decent money to blow and have the need for one. When they do mess up, its very expensive to fix. **** does happen. Gassers are easier to maintain, cheaper to maintain, cheaper to fix, and much cheaper to buy.
