I got rear ended a while back in a Wendy's drive through by an old lady.....i felt bad for her....my hitch went completely through her front bumper...she asked what she should do and i said...either i can pull forward or you can back up....she backed up and ripped aout a 6 inch hold in her front bumper. i got away without a scratch.

If he had a roll pan and hidden hitch, he'd need a roll pan, and probably a tailgate.
I think he's just giving you a comparison.
Personally, I'd focus on the Small bumps and hits rather than the hard ones. If someone hits you hard It'll probably damage your tailgate and bed even with a bumper.
BUT If someone bumps into you with a bumper and a hitch (regular) no worries on your truck. Same scenario with a Rollpan and hidden hitch and you'll at least need a new roll pan. The hidden hitch will likely go into the other persons radiator, leaving the rest of their car to destroy your roll pan.

I am going the same route, the way i look at it, if they hit it with enough force to go through the hitch and push the frame forward, it would have happened with a bumper too

I seen a truck today that had a bad shock or spring. the rear left tire was bouncing like flubber, the Tires where old farm tires that were bald and cracking, and they didn't have any tail lights, brake lights, or blinkers.
That's someone who's going to get rearended.
Luckily for them it's an old 50's ford so the damage will be on the person that hits them.

why is everyone so concerned about being rear ended and crushing their bed and frame? thats what full coverage is for? IMO i rather it be bad enough to get me a WHOLE new bed and or total my truck out, if i'm going through all the downtime and hassle of a wreck it better be a good one where i get MORE money.

Scott, don't do the hitch... Just go buy some 2X3 1/8 square tubing like the stuff i used for frame rails on my mustang. Bring your truck over to my house and we can box a section of the rear fram and weld in the square tubing, should be strong as hell and not weight that much.... Total cost would be like 20-30 bucks and weight a 1/5th of the hidden hitch... BTW who are you kidding, WTF are you going to tow with that converter of yours...
