Unhappy 'Reduced Engine Power' on brand new 2006 GMC Sierra

I know this is kinda long...I just hope someone may be able to help me out or give me some guidance!

I just bought a GMC Sierra in January, & today my gas light came on, so I stopped at a Chevron. I always get either Supreme or Plus, never regular. So I was getting Supreme gas...put in $30...went to start my truck, and it started shaking. The steering wheel was shaking & the truck basically felt like it was wanting to die. I noticed a message that said "REDUCED ENGINE POWER." I was like, "What the #$@!" So I turned it off & waited a couple minutes and started it again. SAME THING. So I turned it off again, started it again, & then it stopped doing it. But then my engine light was on after that, & it stayed on the whole way home.

So I get home & call the dealership to see what was up. Basically, they told me they would have to have it for at least a day, maybe a couple days. But they didn't want to provide me a loaner. I told them real quick where they could shove that. After getting the GM on the phone & being pretty stern, he agreed to give me a loaner. He then proceeded to tell me, "Well, I just want you to be aware that lately quite a few cars have come in with bad gas. You never know if maybe you put in bad gas. Maybe that station has water in their gas or maybe they put diesel in there by accident. But if that is the case, that is between you, your insurance, and the gas station. GMC won't cover that." I told him I didn't see it being that since I had just started the truck, but then again, I don't know crap about this type of stuff. But that just seemed a bit shady to me that he would bring that up like that. So after being at home for a few hours, I wanted to go run somewhere, and the light was no longer on.

I read in the manual that this light will come on if the truck is close to over heating. I know that wasn't the issue, though. Then it also says that if some emergency situation arises where the vehicle feels the need to reduce power in the engine that it will do that, and the light will stay on the next time you drive it. I just don't know what to think now. The way that manager acted almost makes me think he was planning to screw up my gas just to not deal with the expenses of fixing what is wrong...that way it isn't a warranty issue.

But what if the gas is bad? But then I wouldn't have been able to take it around for another 45 minutes later in the evening right? I just dunno what to think. I am pissed because this is a brand new truck!

Did you pop the hood and take a look? Sounds kinda like the MAF slipped partially of or something. I doubt the gas had anything to do with it.

need the code to be sure. there are a few things that cause it. mine use to do it at idle becouse i pulled so much air at idle it didn't understand so i had to program it out and boosted guys ahve a problem sometimes. but all stock i dunno. could be a fluke in the tune from factory and it just wigged out for a minute and figured it self out that last time you drove when the light went out.

Where are you located? I would save a sample of the fuel in the tank and get some paper work started with the fuel depot. There will be more than you complaining if there was a problem with the fuel.

i am curious to see how this turns out. I doubt its water, they have to provide a loaner, regardless and you would definatly know if you got diesel somehow, good luck

I am in Houston, Texas. Yeah I was considering doing that, but everyone besides him is telling me that bad gas wouldn't cause that and it wouldn't even be running right now. I dunno....I guess it's never bad to be too safe. I am just planning to see if anything happens again. Everyone is telling me not to worry about it unless it happens again. But I think I will get that sample of gas just in case.

MAF = mass air flow sensor, it's the sensor on the air intake tube directly after the air filter box (only thing with electrical wires sticking off it)

your MAF sensor is beside the air box. it has a plug that goes to it. it just goes inline with the air tube. ill try to find you a picture.
