Default REALLY need help with brakes

Hi guys, first off I have used the search feature and was unable to find any threads pertaining to what is going on with my truck. I just bought it yesterday, 2004 RCSB 4.8 auto 2wd apx. 70,000 mi. It has a few problems, Odometer reads Odometer : Error, Speedometer jumps around, and it has some brake problems. The situation is this : The front brakes are not applying whatsoever, the pedal goes all the way to the floor before the rear brakes engage and there is no resistance. The calipers and master cylinder have all been bled and dont contain any air. The master cylinder has been replaced twice. The Service Brake System message is displayed and the brake light is on. Any suggestions? I am going to school soon to try and use the Tech II to bleed the Brake Pressure Modulator Valve. Is there any chance that both calipers have gone bad? Any way to check for a bad caliper? Any and all hep is appreciated.

You should not even be driving that truck in that kind of condition. It is very dangerous!!!

If you have access to a tech 2 then you need to scan for codes in all the systems to see whats going on.

As far as the Cluster they are known for having bad stepper motors. To know for sure you need to scan for codes and Sweep the gauges to see if the function properly. Its well documented all over the internet.

It also sounds like you need to scan for codes in the ABS system. Usually when the service brakes soon light come on its an indication of a failure. Could be wiring, could be a sensor, could be a module, could be as simple as a fuse. Any time you service the brake system you should use the Tech 2 to bleed the system internally. It cycles the pump and all the valves to insure there is no air in there.

If your in some type of an automotive program the instructor should be able to walk you through all of this and help you diagnose it.

Seeing as how you had several problems I put this in the general discussion so you would get more activity.

I plan on just sending the gauge cluster off to be rebuilt. Will I need to re bleed the entire system after bleeding the BPMV?

I usually bleed the system of dirty fluid first an then do the ABS brake bleed procedure. The always feels much better after the that.

I will scan for all codes ASAP. But do you think the BPMV could be causing the front brakes not to apply even though there is fluid there?

Its possible. Its also possible that the electrical portion is not allowing the valve to open or even that its stuck.

If there are codes present's it will at least point you in the right direction.

Odometer error in the cluster is not repairable, toss it in trash. You can fix the speedometer but the odometer error will still be there.

Can I reprogram the odometer in a new cluster myself?
