puddle light install troubles! help!

hey yall. i got a 2000 gmc sierra, i recently purchased puddle light mirrors for it. i wired the puddle lights into the courtesy lights that are down on the corner of the doors like in the picture. the goal is for the puddle lights to come on and turn off at the same time as the courtesy lights. the problem i a m having is the puddle lights will stay on even after the courtesy lights turn off. if the mirror harness is plugged in, the light will stay on all the time no matter what the courtesy lgt is doing. if the harness is unplugged, the puddle lights dont come on at all. so it seems to be getting power from somewhere other that the courtesy light power wire. and i cant figure out why. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

try to find a wiring diagram it may help you understand why. Is it switched by ground or 12v source? For both from factory

i cant find any diagrams that have given me any ideas, not quite sure where to look, obviously other than just looking it up, it seems i just find other things instead. my thought is because there is 2 grounds going to the bulb, that its causing it to always be on, i just want to be sure of it before i hack any more wires up.

thanks man for helping me, sorry, but your gonna hate me :bash: i dont really understand this at all. im 18 and this is my first truck, ive done so much to it but nothing really electronically, or at least involving diagrams/ piggybacking off of another power system.

So do you think i should just cut the original ground to bulb, and see if the ground in the circuit for the courtesy light inside the door takes its place? Do you think that would keep the bulb on the same time sequence that the inskde courtesy and dome bulb are on?

I don't know if it's using the ground for the signal but it might work.

So what i read is, at least the courtest lights on the inside of the door are negative switch powered lights. which means they always have power, but the ground is activated to complete the circuit and turn the bulb on. I guess im just not sure on which way to wire it up. If i should just run the ground wire from the courtesy light to it also? And ideas?

That's more than I know... There is only 1 way ro find out if it works.
