Default Parking brake with kick panels

I haven't used my parking brake in over a year since I put in the kick panels cause I don't want to bend the pedal, but I'm getting tired of hearing the nasty clunk when I pull it out of park on our sloped driveway and at the boat ramp. Also read somewhere in here that the parking brake is supposed to self adjust when it is used, and can "sag" and wear out if it is not used. Are there other ways to get the parking brake to work without bending it?
