I definitely wouldn't do it with a rattle can. It will hold up fine, but you need to use a good adhesion promoter. It's all in the prep work to decide if it will look good in 5 years or not.

for prep work are we talking like some sort of degreaser, a light sanding, adhesion promoter and then light coats of paint?...i just want to do this correct the 1st time so like you said, years down the road it will look like i just did it...any paints that are better than others

If you want to do it right give it to a painter. Obviously since you are asking these questions you don't know what you're doing(which is fine, I'm no professional painter either), but if you rattle can it, it's going to look like **** and won't last.

I did a lot of my interior trim pieces with a spray bomb, as long as u gently sand it, and use an adhesion promoter, you will have no problems. You also got to go to a good auto paint supply store that can make you up a good color match. I did mine 2 years ago, and looks awesome, even stood up to the kids climbing over the console with their shoes.

I respect your opinion usually, but Im going to be blunt and say this is simply not true, many guys on many forums including me have not only painted there own interior peices but colourmatched front bumper caps, mirrors and handles with alot of success, anything I have painted has stood up very good to abuse, no flaking, or fadding. If you take your time, and use some quality products it will turn out very good, prep work is the key, wet sanding, and buffing with some good compounds.
