Hmmm. Having a hard time with this one. I really love my current Z71. But it is heavy and slow off the bottle. I "abuse" more than "use" my 4 wheel drive.
I could do another Z71 excab and be happy with reliable upper 12 second runs. This would likely have 3.73s (hard to find 4.10s), I wouldn't want to pay the $1200 to upgrade to 4.10s. I would upgrade to a 6 liter with good sized cam and maybe head work. Install a Yank at the same time. Still be kinda slow off the bottle (upper 14s I'd think). I'd still love the truck.
OR
Go 2wd and have 450 #s less weight Upgrade to 4.10s since I won't have to mess with the front diff. Same 6 liter and Yank upgrade. I will then have to fight traction / wheel hop. Keep the nitrous kit. Shoot for 13s on motor, and mid 12s on gas. Save $5000 on the truck purchase. Not sure I'd like going to a smaller ride height (I'm a tall guy).
OR
Buy an avalanche (without cladding) and quit wasting money on this stupid hobby. I'd love to have the 4 full doors.

I'm still thinking save 5000 on the truck, and put a small body lift on the 2wd and keep your wheels/tires from this truck and be somewhat close to the same ride height as your truck now
no lie about the wasting money on this hobby but its soo damn addictive everytime i say i'm not going to spend money on my truck for a LONG time it never works out. 2 weeks later i see something i HAVE to have
do you still have an extra slot on edit open? or would you just ship it back to them and add another or is 3 the max? i forget

Yep, I have one spot left on the cable. Thats what I was saving it for - Me.
I'm seriously thinking about doing a SS type conversion. Of course it won't have the AWD system, but it won't have the $40K price tag either. I think it would be easier to get into good races if it looks like its an SS not a Z71 (or 2wd).
I'm thinking about sticking to black and chrome, but that arrival blue is appealing. I need to look at it some more in person.

an ss type conversion would be sweet tho if it could be done for a reasonable price

The cheaper price of the 2WD could buy SS clone conversion parts and traction aids (CalTrac bars, better tires). If the weight difference between 2WD and 4WD is 500# that is enough difference to make a big SOTP difference.
My opinions:
1)2WD ecsb
OR
2)Avalnche 2WD w/o body clading (plastic crap made them look like space vehicles),coil spring rear suspension-> better launch control
Heavier than P/U but a total SLEEPER
My $.02

I took a quick test drive of a 2wd excab today. Just wanted to get a feel for it. Not too bad. I'd miss the ride height some, but I'd get used to it. I think I need 2 trucks. An avalanche for farting around and a short bed reg cab to put my go fast parts on.

Didn't get a heads up race, but he ran 2 tenths slower than my extended cab 4x4 did. You know how powerful these LS1 based engines are since you have a C5. No matter what I drive, it will be faster in the 1/4 mile than Jeffs 12.97 ET. Lets see him run that in July.

<----Jeff talking.
I'll run you any time.
Name the place, how about Hallsville a few weeks?
And whats your fastest time ?
Bringit dont sing it!
I wont be running 12.97 in summer heat.
I have a few new mods since the last run, weather was about the same D/A as then, and still on street tires.
Bring it bigtex !
Let put some money on it.
12.97 was with no bottle or slicks left those at the house now that I have a 12, we'll its going get nasty.
Why dont you get a new ss truck. I think with a shot, cam and other stuff they would run good.
