New truck fuel mileage report
#11
Wow 19.6mpg in a heavy crewcab 4x4 with 4.10 gears.
I just went from 13.16mpg up to 15.2mpg, and I thought that was good for a 6.0L.
I'm not really sure what was the major factor in the mileage increase. It must of been something to do with the new cats (old ones were plugged), lowered the truck, took off the bumper and hitch, and adjusted the DFCO settings.
I just installed LS1 fans this weekend, so have to see if they help any.
I've also been thinking about getting an airdam extension, like the 05+ trucks. Then there also the turbo I plan to install in the future that should be good for 2mpg+, and i'm only doing it for the mileage, REALLY.
BTW that 2mpg increase saved me $10 a week at the pumps.

What do you guys think about using 10w30 vs 5w30.
Last time I changed my oil I just used the oil out of the tank at work, I didn't think about at the time, but the we buy 10w30 at work. I used to have a little piston slap when it was cold, now I don't notice it at all, and not as much valvetrain noise.
The other apprentice at work, drives a 98 GMC with a 4.3L in it, and it has a bad case of piston slap, now I’m talking it sounds like it ran out of oil, you can hear it 100 ft away. I told him try the 10w30, he was using 5w30, so now his engine only knocks for a few seconds, instead of minutes.

I'm impressed with the milage I'm getting so far with my 06, 1500, 4.8 auto, 3.23 ratio. It's only got about 2800 miles on the clock so far but the last 3 tanks (30 gals each) have netted, 20.7, 19.2 & 19.08 mpg at 79 mph-the last two fills with lots of headwind too. Of course this is basically all highway but I have to say I'm pleased. Its no powerhouse for sure, but I'll stick with it for the milage......

Where are you putting the extra 4 gallons of fuel?
Majority of the 1500 series trucks only have normal 26gal tanks.

I've had mine removed for two months now. It doesn't get near as good of an average as it did with the tune. 15.0 vs 17.0.
Though today on the way home, I wanted to go a head and check my Hwy mileage without the tune. I set the cruise at 66mph, A/C on, windows and tailgate up. Got a best of 20.8 mpg for apprximately a 26 mile trip. That was from work (Downtown Houston) to my house.
Not too shabby! Though when I'm in morning rush hour, it will average about 15.0. It will stay there on the average with my bad driving habits. (SPEEDING)
With the Nelson tune, I was averaging 16.5-17.0.
Until I get all my bolt-ons, I will just have to eat a loss of 2mpg average.
Jim
