I have no idea, but I believe the reason for the narrow V angle was because with OHC heads it made the engine too wide compare to the gassers.

I don't know about counter-balance shaft. But actually, all the diesels I've seen have gotten far better milage than the equivilent gas engine.

Hopefully GM keeps with the easy to remove DPF for increased economy as well...our 08 dmax has jumped a ton on mpg after DPF removal.
did you have to tune with hptuners to remove the dpf? i would think it would throw codes.

you can use PPE or EFILive to delete the DPF and I think (not 100% sure) you can also with HP Tuners...hmmm come to think of it I think you can with quadzilla too...but PPE & EFI you def can...

my friend did the DPF delete and used PPE and its off the wall...7000lb truck spaking just about anything on the road =

you really cant compair a powerstroke to a gm diesel. I get 15mpg no matter how i drive it including in town and highway. same goes with all of our other powerstrokes. while i talk to guys with dmax's that are getting 23mpg stock and some that have mods get 25+ so I am sure a 1/2 ton diesel will get 20+ easy.

well said, guy I know has a programmer and a few other things on his d-max and averages around 27 mpg, Im thinking the 4.5 with a programmer you should be able to see (hopefully) at least 30mpg

Good point in general, but were there problems with the first year D-Max? I never followed them, this is an honest question.

Any engine runs the risk of small problems during their first year of production. Look at the twin turbo 6.0s Ford put out.

When the 5.3L was introduced in 1999 they had issues with the pcm, knock sensors, egr was later dropped, cam was more mild, etc.

I'm really looking forward to this new diesel. It makes the horsepower of the 5.3L gas engine, the torque of a big block, and should get the fuel economy of a V6.

if you mean like a V6 car then sure, because a V6 truck does'nt improve your fuel economy at all over a V8.

the one thing i hate is that it's going to cost thousandss more then a regular V8... just like everything else in the world if you want something good you have to pay trough the nose!.

i can get a bag of lays for $3 or a bag of baked lays for $4 not to mention that you get less in the healthier choice.. go to mcdonalds and order adouble cheeseburger for a buck or get a grilled chicken sandwich for $3.49 getting fat is cheap losing weight is exspensive, bad fuel economy is cheap.. good fuel economy is expensive.
