nbs spectre quick thoughts
#1
Hey guys,
Me being me I just made a trip to the local advanced auto to pick up paint to colormatch the grille on my rcsb. Then I said I don't feel like taping everything up so I canned the idea of painting, but I did not come out empty handed. I had been eye balling a CAI from spectre there so I said what the heck why not.
I have been looking into CAI's for a day or so so I had a general idea of what they cost, so $130 out the door was a good deal...
You get what you pay with this kit.
Is it a bad kit no, but is it a good kit... no.
Fittment: its not bad, but you do need to tug and pull to get everything to line up and make the bolt holes.
Hardware: this may be a fluke thing but two of the five nuts had literally no threads in them.
Looks/finish: I wanted a metal CAI so I can paint it, but the overall finish on the polished tube is easily a 6.5 out 10.
So with all that in mind I would only give this kit a 6.5-7 out of 10.
Would I buy another one? If it was at a local auto parts store, yeah probably.
If I had to order a kit, I think I would buy a k and n or other brand.

I have the same cai on my truck. It does pretty good and came with a nice big filter. I have thought about pulling it off and going with homemade pvc pipe because the metal will heatsoak. Alot of guys just drop in a K&n filter in the stock box and drill holes in the bottom for more flow.

I would throw the filter away first thing and slip a 96-00 vortec 350 air filter on the MAF inlet. Its a nice tight fit. If you get the severe duty filter its a good 8 inches in diameter and about 12 inches long and its paper. Those sand sifters aren't much good for anything other than sifting out the big material. I've seen way too many of them let tons of dirt through to put one of them on mine. I've seen the spectre kit in person and other than the crappy K&N knock off filter it looked like a decent setup.

I have had it on three of my trucks. I like it, as all of the ones I have bought have came with all parts and in great shape! I don't think it's bad at all. As far as heat soaking I wouldn't know how much of a difference that would make to even matter...IMO...cuz the tube isn't that thick, but I'm not a expert! I wouldnt mind trying one of those cai that have the ram air tube that feeds from below! Not sure who carries those.
