nasty performance intake

I agree that you could make one.
Look for some Mandrel Bent polished intake tubes and then just get clamps and a filter.

Doesn't look like it'll work on a clutch fan setup

Have you ever been to an engine dyno session? Do they run a 3" tube down to the top of the carburetor or is the carburetor left open to breathe? Of course it's left open. The intake manifold opening regardless of motor will regulate the amount of air needed to ingest. You can't have an intake manifold opening too big. It's up to the throttle body opening to regulate that.
