i hope none of you guys in autos are doin this putting the car in neutral while coasting, if so a transmission cost a hell of a lot more than 1 mpg more.
when your auto trans is in neutral moving along it doesnt have fluid pressure building up to lube the drums therefore you will toast the cluthches and if you get it hot enough weld the cluthces to the steels or even better weld the planiteries together with the sun gear and be left with a transmission that can only be taken part so far and you have to scrap the rest.

so any of you guys doin the neutral coast in an auto trans are gonna be way behind on savin money if you keep it up!

just tryin to save someone a few bucks

and the cutting on and off. you put more stress on your motor during startup than at 3k goin down the road and starters go out fairly quick being used like that

I wouldn't like shutting down the engine while coasting because that would be SLOW. I proudly get 9mpg in stock trim now, wait until the heads cam and blower go on...
I thought this was a PERFORMANCE forum!

this thread would make a ton of sense to be placed in a subforum specifically for fuel economy... there was a suggestion about it, but somehow it disappeared...

Sounds like a recipe for accidents.

Shutting off your car while going down the highway=no brakes or pwr steering.

The problem is not gas mileage, the problem is the price of gas.

It is, that's why this thread is in "General Discussion"

Just what we need, a bunch of kids neutral dropping, turning vehicles off at 80mph, stop light turn off's, etc etc...yeah real safe.

I am with ya, the problem is not MPG, we are on pace for great things in engine technology...somebody needs to unhook the phone line at the crude oil traders building.

From my experience in tuning for just a short time, when you do crank the engine back up, it is a lil rich for start up. I dont see how thats goin to help..
Im still playing with my "lean cruise" and spark tables. I filled up yesterday and got 17.5mpg 100% town driving. Its called driving very easy, keep the vacuum high as possible and keep it serviced..

Bingo. Oil was selling at 32 bucks a barrel in 2000. Ya think the ****'s gotten so much more scarce since then? Or could it be something more white collar. Hmm, what's been going on between 2000 and now...
