Default Help, trailer brake box

ok, im trying to put a trailer brake box in my 99 silverado.

here is the problem. ive got the little trailer connector that goes under the dash and then your supposed to hook the trailer box to that. well im not getting any power to those wires. so i called up the guy i bought the kit from and he said well you have to put a fuse in there to make that box work. well does anybody have any clue where in the heck this fuse goes. one buddy told me stud number one. but he said it was some kind of j fuse or something like that. and heck i dont know what or where this is.
im about to just start running all the wires and tapping into the cold side of the brake box. lol
thanks for any help you can provide.

The harness that came with the truck should have a fuse attached....my 01 silverado, mom's 00 burban, and dad's 02 tahoe all had a fuse buundled with the stock harness. I never looked at where it goes, but I'm sure it's in the owner's manual somewhere.

OK looking at the owner's manual now, it looks like there should be a fuse in the stud#1 slot, description says accessory power/trailer wiring feed/load leveling. If you are looking at the underhood fuse box from the drivers side, it is the top left fuse slot.

40 Amp fuse in the Stud 1 position in the under the hood power panel. You can get one from any auto store I would think. I think that the other wires should work though and that fuse is just for the 12v power terminal. You should still have turn signals, marker lights, brake lights and trailer brakes without that fuse installed.

Check your manual for fuses for those lights in the under the hood power panel and the fuse panel in the end of the dash by the driver's door. If that harness can plug into more than one spot in the under the dash panel make sure you have in plugged into the correct spot. It was second from the top left side in mine.

Also they changed the harness for '03 so make sure you have the correct harness for your '99. Are you checking for power at the trailer connector at the back of the truck? That harness only connects the trailer brakes to the trailer brake controller. The rest of your circuits should be good from the factory. Check to see if you have power to the trailer connector at the back of the truck using an automotive test light. Get someone to push the brake and you should have power to the terminals on the left and right sides (stop lights) of the trailer connector and to the terminal on the bottom right (trailer brakes) looking into the connector from behind the truck.
The placement of the fuse in the under the hood power panel may have been different for the '99 model as well so make sure you have the correct procedure for your '99.

Good luck with it.
