I just looked it up for you as I knew somewhere around that time they went from 230HP to 255HP.
1990 - 230HP for sure - TQ was not referenced where I looked it up, but about 390 - and I think they still had the old 3 speed Auto in '90 yet.
1991+ - 255HP for sure - TQ was 400 - 4 speed Auto
So if you are looking for one - I would have to say look for a '91 or newer. Good luck!

I owned a '90 454SS...
This was the only year with the TH400 3 speed.
They did rate the power higher from 91-93 but were plagued with tranny problems due to the torque.
Production numbers were lower for 91-93 and super low for the red and white ones, 90 only came in black.
Truck, stock, ran mid-low 15's...
I had the complete Edelbrock performer package (cam,intake,headers...) mid - low fourteens, slower than ****...
This was the only year with the TH400 3 speed.
