My sister has a 02 Envoy she bought new and has been complaining to me for awhile that it hasn't been running that great, kind of lost it's edge. Well after many months of complaining she drove up for me to check it out. I am thinking ah well probably just air filter, fuel filter, and spark plug time... besides the small exhaust leak at the manifold for the #1 cylinder, check these pics of the air box and rubber grommet for the TB. When I opened the hood and was giving it a quick once over I noticed the TB's rubber grommet didn't look like it was seated all the way back flush against the face of the TB and was at a small angle, but really didn't give it much more thought until I took the air box off to get to the spark plugs. You can see yourself what the problem is.
The only type of work that has been done to it, aside oil changes, is an AutoZone employee installed K&N drop in air filter, which doesn't require the air box to be removed. Other than that only Recall work, no warranty work at all. I looked through the Recalls for it and from what I can see nothing would have required the air box to be removed.
I personally think it came from the factory as it is. I could not see where the grommet was folded into the TB from just looking under the hood. Where it was folded in was on the bottom towards the back, so the only way to have seen it would have been to remove the air box.
What do you guys think? I told her even though it is out of warranty to go to the dealer get a printout of all the Recall work to verify if it would have required the air box to be removed, then start going up the chain with it. No power up top and slow to rev in P/N, so with 60K on the clock the cylinders are ****. Probably wore like a motor with 600K. I would think GM owes her a new motor.

Looks to me like someone screwed that up. I don't think it came from the factory like that. I think what happened is someone was putting the box back on and just shoved it up, then put the hose clamp around it and tightned it up. Also with that big of a leak at the TB that is why its gutless and slow to rev. Its getting un-metered air. Did you try it after putting it on properly? I would bet it would run fine after that. Its hard to say how much damage is done if any on the inside. It would all depend on driving conditions and how long it was like that, probably when it lost its edge is when that happened with the box. Simple way to find out is to do a compression test

I doubt Gm will give you a new motor... it would just make too much sense, lol. But, they have two little words to fall back on... "expired warrenty" so they dont have to do a thing...
Im kinda surprised that there wasnt any codes thrown... no check engine lights came on?

the envoy is a maf-less system. guess that is why no light/no codes thrown. i cleaned everything up really good and put it back together, but still a dog. i don't have any idea who would have had taken the air box off, or for what reason. lil sis isn't married, so guess who gets the call if she hears a cricket fart. oops can i say fart??? oh well...

what makes you believe the cylinders are feces? If that was allowing un metered to enter the engine it almost certianly ran lean. Have you reset the fuel trims after fixing the problem?
