Default Funky starter issue, who else has it?

I've owned my 06 HD (gasser) for about 4 years now and every once in a blue moon when trying to start it, I will hit the key and the starter will engage as it should normally but then, before the engine starts, its almost as if the gear on the starter retracts away from the flywheel for a split second but then tries to remesh with the flywheel to continue trying to start the engine, but cannot, leaving me required to let it stop completely and hit the key a second time, in which case I NEVER have a problem on the 2nd go around. Recently, however, this has been getting worse, at least 2 in 4 starts its doing this. Now i've just finished reading a thread over at diesel place with 24 pages, over 200 posts over 2 year span and not one person has a clear solution or root to the problem. Granted they are all on duramax's, but it seems as if I'm having the same issue here...... I'm not dropping a penny into it until i know exactly what to buy either because several have changed flywheels, flexplates, starters, batter cables, etc with very little success rate. I would hope the someone else in the gasser family of these trucks would have a similar issue as I do.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

i had a somewhat similar issue where i would go to start my truck, the solenoid would engage but then i lost all power to my truck no matter what i did. i would try to cycle the key and nothing would happen.. and when i mean nothing i mean it. No dash lights would go on or anything. I did some digging around under the hood and i noticed a tiny bit of corrosion on the negative battery cable to the battery. took it off, cleaned it up, ran a chaser tap thru the battery to clean it up too and i haven't had it happen again for 4 weeks now. I also cleaned up the terminals on the starter and solenoid and looked around for any dirty ground and cleaned em up. hope this helps!

You have a bad starter (solenoid, chuck, dirt in planetary) most likely. Not wanting to replace it because the diesel guys have electrical gremlins is retarded.

If you haven't replaced it, then us guessing as to why your starter has failed is a moot point.

I never said anything about electrical gremlins or that it has failed. It still starts up every day and takes me where I need to go, it just has a hiccup that is getting worse and it seems similar to the diesel group. I"m not refusing to buy parts JUST because none of those guys have found a real solution, that is why I came here, to see if anyone in the gas group has had a similar issue. I have no problem buying a new starter if that's the problem, or anything else for that matter. Maybe I should rephrase my statement; I'm just not going to **** away money by buying all kinds of different parts in hopes that one of them will finally solve my problem, THAT is retarded.

If it's missing engagement or popping out of engagement, either the starter is bad or the flexplate not lined up properly. If you have a starter repair shop around there you could take it out and get it tested.
