I tried carfax but they want $20.
Is there a place that does it for free? I have no idea where to look.

Just ask in other forum.... vehicle classifieds... most of the time someone has an account and will do it.
There was a link a few people had/posted a while back for carfax that was free.... it was for military only though.... hint hint
