Doing a 4l80 with my 5.3... converter or gears?
#11
There's no issues with fitment if I got my 4l80 from a 2000 iron head 6.0 is there? The difference is the longer crank but the trans is still the same all the way up to 2004, yea?

I'm glad you mention that combo because I was thinking of running that same wheel set up. 275/55/20. I did some reading last night on converters and apparently one rule of thumb is to choose a stall lower than hwy cruising RPM? Otherwise it'll never achieve lock up?
Also, apparently you want to try and get around 500ish higher than the beginning of the powerband for your cam. My cam range I think makes power from 1400 - 6200.
Of course gears, wheel size, and other mods can tweak all this. So I'm on the fence. 4.10s or 3.90 are looking attractive. 4.56 as mentioned would be fun but I do take the hwy in to work and I plan to take it out of town on occasion. So I'll need something kind of in the middle for gears.
Still on the fence about the converter though. Was actually thinking the smallest I could get at 2800 stall.

More than likely, a 3000 converter and 4.10s would suit you fine.
A stall converter doesn't automatically = drag car/truck. It's about matched parts to optimize the combination. You do want your money's worth after purchasing these parts, right?

Who told you that it wouldn't lock? That's bad information. I daily drove a Yank 4400 - 2000 Z28 in my sig. It drove very tame until you got agressive with the skinny pedal.

It was just one of the rules of thumb mentioned that you wanna pick a stall that's not over your cruising RPM but maybe I just misinterpreted it.
My build is on hold anyway as I just secured an LQ4. So I'm gonna finish patching up the 5.3 and sell it off.
Any benefit of a 2004 4l80 over the 00-03? I think the only changes were the NSS and some changes to the valve body. Been searching awhile and really can't find much on what these VB changes were and if they would constitute being a better trans to build with.

Has anyone ever heard of Merica Transmissions? I have been shopping around for a 4L80E and have never heard of them.
