Default cold start

I am looking at buying a 2001 Tahoe but the owner says that it has a "cold start" and that it taps and makes noise for about 3 minutes when it is started. Another friend told me that this is a typical problem that has to do with the engine rings in V8 models from 01-06 and that the manufacturers did not want to do a recall. Has anyone heard of this or had similar problems?
Do you think it is okay to buy?

Sounds like piston slap. Pretty common.
