Default Cam Swap Day 1

For you guys that get this stuff done in a single day . My buddy and I met up at 9 am for breakfast and to get some last minute things I had forgotten (pen magnets, new ac belt, some oil, etc) We got started about 11am. I took off most of the stuff accociated with the supercharger while he got his tools out. I cant believe how much stuff needs to be removed to get access to bolts and such!! We had to move the A/C compressor and bracket to get access to one of the timing chain cover bolts and we had to unbolt the alt bracket that holds the blower to get get the cover off. We had to take out both skid plates and have to drop the pan tomorrow since we dropped a bolt from the oil pump (the one by the O ring. We called it quits at about 6pm since we were losing light and the day that had started out in the low 70's is now high 40's . We got the new cam in and a couple of the springs. We had to make 2 trips out for a new magnet and some food. I thought we'd get more done in that period of time, but we did what we could. In reality I didnt do much of anything after the blower stuff was off .
Have any of you had to drop the oil pan? How difficult is it? He said I needed to get my oil changed within 100 miles after the cam swap due to the assembly lube on the cam?
We are going to start at 9 am tomorrow and hope to be done before 3pm. Hopefully this wont go past day 2.

Man you had a rough day, the bolt in the oil pan just plain sucks I looked at the oilpan in mine and said " no way in hell " so I left my oil pump. I changed my oil a 100 miles after the cam swap. I soaked my cam in oil though, no assembly lube.

I don't know about 4wd, but 2wd is pretty easy. You unbolt the rack and pinion, and there's a crossmember you can drop to easily get to the pan. I've never done, but Chilton makes it sound easy.

what are the specs on the cam? 5.3 right. I've got a cam swap to do in the next couple of weeks on my truck, i think i'm just going to leave the oil pump and stock timing chain in place. although i do have a ls6 ported one, i see no need in changing out right now.

WAIT on that pan drop. The same thing happened to me before and I was able to fish it out with a pen magnet. It stayed pretty much right under the oil pick up. I could not see it, but got lucky and caught it with a pen mag. Give that a shot first. Just go fishing for a few minutes. Remember that pan has an anti splash plate in it so the sump won't run dry going down hill. You may get lucky. I doubt it dropped all the way down.

I tried for a few minutes, but couldnt find anything. We think it might in the windage tray somewhere? I may try again later, but I had to stop at 2 pm today for work stuff . We got the cam and springs in and the pushrods and rockers. It may sit until Wed since I have a pretty hectic schedule until then and he has to work as well.

Its the 212/218 that everyone has. As far as I know, the oil pump and timing chain have to come off to take out the cam. Getting everything aligned took some time and the ONLY way to get the keepers to stay on the retainers for the spring swap is with assembly lube! There is quite a bit to do. We've spent a total of 12 hours of work. We also had to make 4 trips to get numerous things like when the bolt for the spring tool stripped. We still have about 4 hours of work to go with dropping the pan to get the bolt, filling up the coolant, changing the oil, and double checking things after everything is put back together.
Day 3 is going to have to wait until Wednesday. Then the tuning begins
