The old break in period has a LOT to do with old flat tappet cams. Anyone who's ever built an old SBC knows to run the cam at X RPM for X amount off time. It is very important to "wear" the lifters into the cam.

With the Gen3 motors, there's no need for this. The motors had at least 15 minutes or so on it before you even get it. It's broke in and ready to go when you pick it up.

Now, the ring & pinion is another matter. try to not let the fluid get hot for the first hundred miles or so. let it cycle, warm, sit, warm, sit. It'll pay dividends in the long run.

Yeah I forgot, heck even the gears in the new cars and truck are set.

I'm pretty sure any car you drive off a lot nowadays is ready to roll, can you imagine the amount of warranty work that would had to be done if not.

Every new GM is given a PDI (Pre-Delivery Inspection) that includes a several mile drive. I know we used to take them out and run them pretty hard, especially the T/a's and GTO's. The unspoken theory was that we would treat them as if a Teenager was buying it and we would rather find any issue before we put it on the lot for sale. We had several that made a noise here or there that we didn't like so we mad GM pay us to fix them so the customer would get what they should expect with a new car. We had a GTO with less than 100 miles break the 4l60 so bad on a test drive the Tranny guy had never even seen one that bad. In his opinion he believed they tryed to manually shift it and found reverse, it even broke the case and input shaft.

I am a bmw tech, I PDI 130k M5/M6, 85k M3 There is a sticker on the windshield that tells you how to drive it for the first 1200 miles, like never rev past 5k and do not use cruise and a few others. When I PDI them, I turn traction control off and go for the redline (8750). If it is gonna break I want it to break on me, not a cust that just spent over 100k on a car. All the BMW M cars have a 1200 serv and we change all the fluids-oil, trans, rear.

I give all my pdi's hell. Drive it like you stole it.
