Default body control module

Friend of mine has an 03 4x4 with 5.3. An "off duty" chevy dealer mechanic said the bcm was bad on his truck. Was told he had to buy a new one and have it programmed by the dealer. Is that true or can he not get one at salvage yard? That seems odd to me. Does every truck have a different program?

The bcms are the same between 03-6 me thinks.

BUT the replacement has to be from an 03 if he does not want to get it programmed due to the theft deterent coding being different from year to year.

Yes programming is different the replacent has to be from a truck with the same basic options as his. If his truck has digital dual zone a/c steering wheel controls power fold mirrors you will lose these options by installing a bcm that came from a truck that did not have these options
