Default Bearing failure

For those of you that wounder if you can use a four wheel drive bearing in a two wheel drive truck, the answer is no! I tried to tell my shop foreman that but he has done this for a long time, and know what he is doing. "It don't matter if it's two or four wheel there all the same." I just laughed and said ok. My self, I think it makes a difference. But I am an estimator what do I know.

No, we lucked out. The only damage was a wheel and rotor.

It doesn't matter. Alot of them are the same. That failed either due to contamination or incorrect preload. 99% of the time, its incorrect preload on reassembly after a clean and repack or on a fresh install. I see it all the time from other techs.

Your shop repacks hub bearing assemblies? Just looks like an old hub to me.

The 4x4 hubs on the 99-07 classic are not the same as a 2wd hub. They use the axle stub to keep the assemby together. Other years and other vehicals Maybe the same or similar in appearnce but on these they are not. Every time I have seen some one put a 4x4 hub on a 2WD it does basically the same thing.

Last tech I saw do this barely made it out of the drive way onto a busy street when this happened.

The GMT800 hubs have converged to be the same. Early 2wd hubs and 4wd hubs were different but should all be serviced by the same part# now.

No we do not repack bearings, I work in a bodyshop and we got the knee assy. It came with the bearing already in it. That was the aftermath of a mile and a half of driving.
