That picture of the C1 clutch pack explains why you don't get full power until second gear. Wonder why they built it like that when 1st gear is used to get huge loads started rolling. Seems like 1st gear would be built stronger.

The 5th gear pack looks pretty good, I guess it slips because of the overdrive adding extra stress?

Here is another site with some specs on the Allison transmissions.

Maybe they thought that most people weren't going to be racin' these trucks and just get to a slow roll. That 1st gear is gone pretty quick in these.

If I recall, 5th slips due to the converter's lockup clutch being insufficient over about 100rwhp more.

So is it the actual 5th gear clutches that slip or the actual torque converter clutch? Does an upgraded converter take care of the 5th gear problem?

What can be done to strengthen the first gear pack?

You need a custom title of resident transmission guru.

I'm a little slow today, but I'm about 95% sure it's the converter only in 5th that slips. Like if you're towing and tryin' to keep the converter locked. It will just defuel to limit the slip typically. Hell it stress cracks around the lugs with bigger power levels...so there's more than one reason for an aftermarket converter other than the lower stall equating to quicker takeoffs! I'll be getting the triple clutch Suncoast, they also offer a single clutch w/ billet cover for like $300 less...if you're dropping $1100 for a converter I think you could shell out $300 more. hahaha

Alto has a FULL rebuild kit for the Allison 1000, 2000, and 2400 out now. Their clutches are dual sided and I think the Suncoast is one sided (like that Z-Pak out for the 4L60E). Both kickass and are very nice. Basically going to an aftermarket friction typically increases torque capacity. Also the Alto made Kolene steel plates help a lot with heat. Hell I think they have billet clutch apply rings now too. Suncoast is proud of their fully built trannies, but they're the only place that I see dealing with Hi-Po Allisons other than ATS. If I could get a core Allison, I'd rebuild my own.

LOL, Resident Tranny Guy! Well, I get PMs a lot about them already! You should see what I know about the Ford AOD and E4OD/4R100! I just try to share the info so people don't take a bath on stuff.

I'm going back to the GMC dealer this Tuesday...

Transmission center dot net is selling some stuff for the Allison now too. Transgo, converter, new alto clutches, and a deep pan for like $1900.
