Im lookin at a 76 Chevy, with a 350 and a 4bbl, its got the turbo 350 with a leaking seal, and I can get a new one (edit: new transmission) and replace it myself for $500. The guy wants 1500 for the truck and Im thinking about offering a 1000 for it.
What I want to know is, is it worth in or should I go a little lower, I really want to drop the truck and put a wicked cam in it, and maybe a little higher stall with the tranny swap.

These old trucks are know for rust in the passenger floor board, rockers, lower cab corner, and top of the fender well lip. I got an 78 RCSB for $1500, I have been working on the body for about 5 years know, I might spend 1 week on it every year.
The truck I got was only primered and has literally a ton of bondo on it, one way to check for bondo is run a flat magnet (refrigerator magnets works good) over the body, if it sticks the body has no bondo, if it does not stick then there is bondo under the magnet.
Where is tranny leaking from?
As for the price $1500 is a descent price with a straight body, if you got body rust or a lot of bondo don't give over $1000.

tranny is leaking from the rear seal, he said if he puts 5 or 6 quarts of fluid in it it will shift, so Im pretty sure it wont last long after the seal is replaced, thats why I was leaning towards a new tranny. For the most part the body is ok, it does have rust at the base of the fenders and doors, the floor pnls have already been replaced, and one of the rear fenders has a dent in it, I was thinking of just making it quick and leaving the body basicaly as is.
