6.0 Core question
#1
Hello all,
Im looking at purchasing a "core" engine. Shop says they guarantee that the heads, block and pistons are "rebuildable". Engine is 400+150 shipped to residential.
My question is, does this seem like a good price? I'm looking to use the block for a mild build 408, so its going to be machined and checked.
the block is a lq4 (6.0) from a 2004 silverado 2500

Where about are you located?
I've purchased 2 "core" engines locally for about half that, granted they were 5.3's and I went and picked them up.
Also, you have to ask yourself how much you trust that shop? I bought both engines under the pretense that they were buildable when in fact they were not. There were components that were "salvageable" but no amount of machine work would have been able to produce a usable engine out of both units. All of this is just my opinion so, take it for what it's worth, but from my experience, I would stay away from cores. If you are trying to stay budget friendly, I would hit up craigslist and try to find a wreck that someone is parting out. Something you can hear run.
Again, just my opinion, I haven't had the greatest luck with used engines.....

thanks, i greatly appreciate that. Im looking in the metro detroit area, and everyone wants a premium for these engines. hell, ive even found brand new 6.2 blocks for cheaper..

If you knew someone who had their dealers license, you could buy a wreck/rollover off copart, pull off what you wanted and part out the rest here! That's what I plan to do when I LS swap my c10. Just some food for thought.
Also, it sounds like you are more interested in the 6.0/6.2 but Summit is running a sale on the new 5.3/4.8 blocks for $299 last time I checked....
