2001 and 2002 LQ4's had a problem with it here and there but it is a fairly uncommon occurence. I had one of my own do it and one customers truck but since 1999 those have been the only 2 times I've seen it happen. And we get some volume through the doors.

And even with those that have had an issue, most of the time it occurs when performing a cam swap. The cam bearing bore sizes were changed for the LS engines at the end of ’03 for the ’04 model run. The earlier engines had a tendency to not hold the bearings as well, but some instances of newer engines suffering from dislodged cam bearings have surfaced as well. Even being gentle removing the old cam has dislodged some, but combining a cam with a little varnish on it with someone that isn’t real careful and bearings that aren’t secured very well can be a recipe for disaster, or at least some pretty good set-backs. My ’01 6.0L still has the original cam bearings in place and has had a cam swap performed about 5 years ago and survived with no issues, so I wouldn’t loose any sleep over it, especially if your dad wasn’t planning on going into the engine.
