What would be better in a daily driven 4x4 that will see towing and offroad use? its a 2001 silverado 1500 but whatever i build will have a level 2 performabuilt transmission behind it the 397 is a 4.030 x 3.900 stroke with the K1 tech crank or the 408 with a 4 inch stroke ive heard some of the 408s burn oil im not sure if thats true though can anyone chime in?

If i got some custom pistons and did a 4.155 bore x 3.900 stroke motor would it last longer than a 408?

 

4.155 bore will require an aftermarket block.

What pistons are out there for the 3.9 stroke?

 

if you are smart with your piston choice, you can have a healthy and longer lasting 408. i just put one together using 4032 alloy pistons since its N/a with a little bit of juice. the wear characteristics are better than 2618. granted ill be happy if it hits 100k but it is my daily.
