Default 2002 gmc sierra gauge cluster to gen4??

I am wanting to do a Gen3 to Gen4 engine and trans swap and was told that the Gen4 setup requires the gauge cluster to work properly. Is this correct and would a 2005 or 2006 gauge cluster be a direct fit for my 2002? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No, a 2003+ cluster will not work in a 2002- truck. The control system is different.

I understand that the control system is different. I will be swapping out engine/trans/harness/pcm. I just need to know if the cluster will fit. I may be misunderstanding tho. Thanks for the help.

Gen3 and Gen4 reefers to the engine and not the cluster or years of the truck.

Yes. I was told that the transmission I will be running out of a Gen4 will need the same year model cluster to operate properly. If I'm understanding this correctly the trans has it's own computer that talks to the PCM thru the gauge cluster. Is this correct?

Ok, found out what I'm looking for is the CAN BUS. Is it integrated into the dash cluster or is it mounted up under the hood? And am I correct in thinking that all this will operate ok in my swap without needing external controllers?

A Gen 4 can bus system is entirely different.

CANBUS and GM's CAN-D systems are ring networks. All for one, one for all.

You would have to perform a complete body harness swap with the Gen4 PCM, BCM and cluster. If you neglect one or miss a connection, the most common side effect is the car won't start anymore. (take Jaguar for instance- if the speedo fails, the car is dead!)
