You can't just "use" one: the unit memorizes the VIN # of the truck it's on, and will not operate on another truck until it has been removed from the previous truck.

I sure wish you could do this though; it'd save a lot of us some good money. Unfortunately, there's no way around it, and I too ended up buying the HPPIII. That said, I LOVE it! Clearly from all the positive responses throughout the forums here you'll see how much people like the unit. Its one of the best buys I've made for my truck.

Good luck finding someone around here who wants to get rid of one. You may also want to try Ebay.

I just sold mine on eBay for 200 + 10 shipping. It went within a day of listing it.
