what is the advantages or disadvantages of the long and short canister? I have the option to get either one for free (former client owns a huge salvage yard)... which should I get?

In the event of an engine failure the larger canister is able to provide more pumps of the brake before you lose the function of "power brakes." Aside from that, you won't notice a difference.

I would get which ever has fewer miles on it
